Training in Action: LiUNA Trainees Support the Kakabeka Legion

Trainees from the LiUNA Local 607 Training Centre put their skills to work on a meaningful community project at Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 225 in Kakabeka Falls.

As part of the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, 11 trainees helped repair the concrete base and surrounding sidewalk of the Legion’s cenotaph. The project gave participants valuable experience on a real job site while helping the Legion complete important repairs to a place of remembrance.

LiUNA Local 607’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program provides hands-on training in Construction Craft Worker and Concrete Finishing. Under the supervision of experienced instructors, trainees completed structural repairs using locally sourced concrete products.

“This is exactly the kind of opportunity we look for,” said Andy Nieweglowski, Training Director at the LiUNA Local 607 Training Centre. “Our trainees get to develop their skills on a real job site while contributing to something that matters.”

Trainee Msgna Yohannes said the project was a source of pride for the entire group.

“Doing this work for the Legion and the community makes us all very proud,” he said.

For the Kakabeka Legion, the partnership provided support for repairs that would have been difficult for its volunteers to complete alone.

“It’s good for the trainees, good for the Legion and good for the whole community,” said Bob Gill, Second Vice-President of the Kakabeka Legion.

The project reflects LiUNA’s commitment to combining practical training with meaningful community service. Local 607 is proud of the trainees who contributed to the work and looks forward to creating more opportunities to build skills while giving back.
