Whether it’s in the workplace or in the classroom, the skills apprentices gain lead to challenging, rewarding and profitable jobs in an industry that provides tremendous opportunities.

About 90 per cent of apprenticeship training is provided by employers in the workplace. The remainder involves classroom instruction and theory, which is provided at each Local’s Training Centre.  Apprentices from LiUNA training are considered by employers to be among the most productive, conscientious, qualified and safety-oriented individuals in the industry.

Apprenticeship Programs

Pre-Apprenticeship Training

Our Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program combines our Construction Craft Worker and Concrete Finisher training into an comprehensive 11 week program. Participants will learn basic literacy and receive hands-on training preparing them for entry-level work across a wide range of construction environments, culminating in a paid work placement with one of LiUNA’s signatory employers. 

Expectations

This program is best suited to individuals who are ready for active, hands-on learning in a construction setting. Participants are expected to follow safety procedures, work collaboratively, take direction well, use tools and equipment properly, and develop the practical skills, precision, and consistency needed to support quality work on site.

Courses/Training Provided

  • Reading and applying blueprints, drawings, and layouts
  • Hand, power tool, and stationary equipment use
  • Form setting, flatwork preparation, and reinforcing
  • Concrete placing, levelling, finishing, curing, and jointing
  • Operation of powered equipment, including power trowels and power screeds
  • Material stripping, handling, rigging, and hoisting
  • Scaffolding erection and dismantling
  • Site backfilling, compaction, and utility installation or repair
  • Concrete surface finishing, repair, and restoration

Construction Craft Worker

The Construction Craft Worker program prepares participants for entry-level work across a wide range of construction environments. Through hands-on training, participants build practical skills in site preparation, material handling, tool use, form setting, rigging, scaffolding, and utility-related work.

Expectations

This program is best suited to individuals who are ready for active, hands-on learning in a construction setting. Participants are expected to follow safety procedures, work collaboratively, take direction well, and develop confidence using tools, equipment, and materials commonly found on job sites.

Cement (Concrete Finisher)

The Cement (Concrete Finisher) program introduces participants to the core skills required to work with concrete in construction applications. Training focuses on preparing, placing, finishing, and repairing concrete surfaces, while building experience with the equipment, techniques, and finishing methods used in the trade.

Expectations

Participants should be prepared for detailed, hands-on training that combines physical work with precision and consistency. The program emphasizes safe work habits, proper equipment use, and the development of strong finishing techniques needed to produce durable, high-quality concrete work on site.

  • Concrete flatwork preparation, forming, reinforcing, placing, levelling, finishing, curing, and jointing
  • Operation of powered equipment, including power trowels and power screeds
  • Horizontal concrete surface finishing methods
  • Traditional trowel finishing
  • Exposed aggregate finishing
  • Imprinted concrete finishing
  • Pigmented, stained, dyed, and polished concrete applications
  • Concrete surface and structure repair and restoration

Women in Trades (Residential Construction Worker)

The Women in Trades Residential Construction Worker Program is a women-centred training opportunity designed to build practical, job-ready skills for residential construction. Participants gain hands-on experience in core areas of homebuilding while developing the knowledge, confidence, and foundational trade skills needed to pursue work in the industry.

Expectations

Participants should be prepared for hands-on learning in an active construction training environment. The program emphasizes safety, skill development, and teamwork, while supporting participants through basic skills upgrading and practical instruction across key areas of residential construction. A willingness to learn, participate fully, and build confidence in the trades is essential.
